France wine production faces historic low due to heat and drought
France is facing a historic decline in wine production, with estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture's statistical service, Agreste, projecting a total output of approximately 33.9 million hectolitres for 2026. This figure represents a 6% decrease from 2025 and is 17% below the 2021-2025 average, marking one of the lowest yields in nearly three decades.
The primary drivers for this decline are extreme summer heatwaves and prolonged drought, which have accelerated grape ripening and reduced yields per hectare. The Champagne region is particularly hard-hit, with production expected to plummet by nearly 50% compared to 2025. Other regions like Bourgogne-Beaujolais are also seeing significant decreases.
In contrast, some southern regions show resilience; Languedoc-Roussillon is expected to see a 5% increase in production, and Bordeaux is projected to rebound by 10% due to late-August rainfall. To assist the sector, the French government has announced an emergency support package exceeding 1 billion euros for farmers affected by these climatic conditions.
