Climate conditions impact apple harvests in Germany
Regional apple harvests in parts of Germany have been significantly impacted by prolonged heat and drought, leading to smaller yields and lower fruit quality.
In Borgentreich, the Familienforum organized an apple-picking event in the Liebestal, where participants collected approximately 2,700 kg of fruit. Organizers noted that many apples were small or rotten due to the climate, providing a practical lesson for children on how weather affects local food production.
Similarly, in Mühlheim, the Streuobstfreunde vom Gailenberg held their fourth ‘Äbbelschebberfest’. While the event saw good attendance and interest in variety exhibitions, the poor harvest meant that apple sales were impossible. Due to the scarcity of fruit, cider was served in miniature cups rather than standard glasses, though visitors noted the quality remained high despite the lower volume.
