Climate crisis threatens global food supplies and drives up prices

Extreme heatwaves and drought are threatening global food supplies, leading to predicted price increases for essential goods. The Food and Beverage Federation (FDF) reports that recent heatwaves have significantly undermined the supply of fruits, vegetables, and grains. Specifically, shortages in crops like broccoli and cherries are already being observed.

Decreased grain yields are driving up the cost of animal feed, which is expected to impact meat and dairy production. Economists warn that cost pressures stemming from raw material shortages could trigger upward food inflation through 2027. Additionally, heat stress on livestock in Turkey may lead to lower yields in milk, butter, and cheese.

Global supply chain issues, exacerbated by conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, further complicate the market. As European yields decline, increased demand from European traders for Turkish produce could reduce domestic supply and drive up local prices.
