Climate crisis triggers emergency food security summit in Honduras and infrastructure planning in Peru

In Honduras, the National Congress has unanimously approved a motion to hold the First Congress for People's Food Security. This emergency summit aims to address the severe impact of drought on the country's productive zones and establish medium- and long-term responses to food vulnerability. The meeting will involve authorities from 75 municipalities currently under green alert, state institutions, and international organizations. Proposed measures include the temporary flexibility of rules regarding municipal transfers to allow local governments to use funds directly for emergency relief, as well as investments in water infrastructure such as reservoirs and wells.

In Peru, the National Infrastructure Authority (ANIN) and the regional government of Lambayeque are coordinating preventive actions to mitigate the effects of the El Niño phenomenon. Officials are evaluating critical infrastructure projects, including river defenses for the Olmos, Motupe, La Leche, Chancay, and Zaña rivers, as well as the Chiclayo storm drainage project. These interventions are considered strategic to reduce the vulnerability of the population and local infrastructure to extreme weather events.
