Overview

The Honduran Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) has continued to expand its agricultural support programme. In June the Congress approved two statutes: the Ley de Alivio Financiero al Productor del Agro, which enables farmers to refinance debt for up to 15 years with an 80 % subsidy on agro‑insurance premiums, and the Ley de Fortalecimiento al Sector Agroindustrial, aimed at protecting domestic production and securing property rights. The government reaffirmed its 64.3 million‑lempira investment in 432 coffee, livestock, grain and salt producers, and maintained the 140 million‑lempira irrigation upgrade covering five districts, improving water efficiency for roughly 12,000 ha.

The UN FAO, backed by the Regional Humanitarian Fund, delivered cash‑plus assistance to 4,000 households in the dry corridor, while grain‑reserve officials confirmed that national stocks remain adequate despite severe drought. To offset expected shortfalls, the state will import about 5.5 million quintals of rice and 18‑19 million quintals of yellow corn, and has secured high‑yield rice seed varieties from the Dominican Republic.

The drought’s impact deepened, with reports of up to 100 % crop loss in several departments, prompting calls for a red‑alert declaration and accelerated assistance. The four‑year, 12‑million‑lempira livestock pilot, coordinated with Heifer International and local agencies, continues to support around 3,000 small‑scale cattle producers.

Overall, the government’s combined fiscal, legal and humanitarian actions aim to bolster agricultural productivity, safeguard food supplies and mitigate climate‑related risks across Honduras.
