While individual weather events like a single hot summer do not define climate change, the accumulation of data over 75 years reveals significant trends that impact local environments.

Recent record-breaking heatwaves and prolonged dry weather have caused substantial ecological damage. Experts from the Avon Wildlife Trust report that extreme heat has desiccated plants, depleted grasslands, and increased soil erosion. These conditions have disrupted natural cycles, such as causing food sources like seeds and berries to ripen prematurely, which threatens wildlife food supplies during autumn and winter. Additionally, the lack of moisture affects insect emergence and bird nesting patterns, potentially creating a mismatch between food availability and the hatching of young.
