Greenland ice sheet shrinks for 30th consecutive year

The Greenland ice sheet has experienced a net loss of ice mass for 30 consecutive years, according to new data from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS). The most recent melting period, spanning from September to August, resulted in a loss of approximately 173 billion tons of ice.

Researchers note that the last time the ice sheet saw a net increase in mass was during the 1995–1996 season. While the current annual loss is lower than the 458 billion tons lost in 2012, scientists emphasize that the three-decade trend represents a significant climate signal rather than a temporary fluctuation.

The ice sheet covers roughly 80 percent of Greenland and contains vast freshwater reserves. Scientists warn that its continued melting contributes directly to rising global sea levels, noting that a complete melt would raise oceans by about 7.4 meters.
