Overview

Data indicates a long-term trend of mass loss in the Greenland ice sheet. Recent observations from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) show the ice sheet has experienced a net loss for 30 consecutive years, with approximately 173 billion tons of ice lost in the most recent annual period. The last time the ice sheet saw a net increase in mass was during the 1995–1996 season.

According to the European State of the Climate 2025 Report, the ice sheet lost 139 gigatonnes of ice in the previous year, contributing to a 0.4 mm rise in global mean sea levels. While ice loss rates have increased roughly fivefold since the 1980s, historical data suggests mass loss began around 1900. Total losses since 1972 have reached 5,747 gigatonnes.
