Climate resilience and wildfire prevention strategies urged in Italy

The Associazione Italiana Infrastrutture Sostenibili (AIS) has called for a paradigm shift in infrastructure design to move from emergency management to systemic climate resilience. The association warns that extreme weather events are no longer future threats but current realities. Failure to invest in climate-resilient materials and design could lead to global economic damages exceeding $5 trillion annually. Furthermore, heat stress is projected to cause a loss of over 2% of global working hours by 2030, costing approximately $2.4 trillion per year.

In the Ossola region of Italy, local leaders and Senator Enrico Borghi met in Piedimulera to address the aftermath of recent wildfires. Borghi proposed a mitigation and adaptation plan to combat environmental vulnerability caused by drought and extreme weather. Key recommendations include the creation of fire prevention tracks equipped with hydraulic nozzles to stop fires in high-altitude areas before they reach residential zones. Borghi also expressed intent to request formal honors from the President of the Republic for the firefighters, volunteers, and Civil Protection personnel involved in the emergency response.
