Climber Jake Whisenant dies in California climbing accident

Renowned American speed climber Jake Whisenant has died following a fall in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon wilderness area of California. The incident occurred during a first ascent on August 2, as reported by the National Park Service and the Tulare County Coroner's Office.

Whisenant, 30, was a prominent figure in the climbing community, known for setting significant speed records in Yosemite National Park. In October 2024, he and partner Brant Hysell set a record on the ‘Lurking Fear’ route on El Capitan, completing it in 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 32 seconds, breaking a record that had stood since 2003. He also achieved notable times on ‘The Nose’ route.

Friends and family have shared tributes to his determination and passion for the sport. A GoFundMe campaign has been established by his friend Bailee Moore to honor his memory.
