Death of climber Jacob Whisenant

Professional rock climber Jacob ‘Jake’ Whisenant, 30, died following a fall in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The accident occurred in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon area while Whisenant was attempting a first ascent of a new route.

Whisenant was a prominent figure in the climbing community, recognized for setting significant speed records in Yosemite National Park. Notably, in October 2024, he and partner Brant Hysell broke a two-decade-old record on El Capitan’s ‘Lurking Fear’ route, completing the climb in 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 32 seconds. He also achieved notable times on ‘The Nose’ route, including completing the climb twice in a single day earlier this year.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner and the National Park Service confirmed the incident, ruling the death accidental due to blunt force trauma. In the wake of the accident, friends and family have shared tributes to his passion for the sport. His fiancée, Emma London, shared a tribute describing his dedication and supportive nature toward fellow climbers. A GoFundMe campaign has been established by his friend Bailee Moore to honor his memory.
