Climber Jake Whisenant dies in Sierra Nevada accident
Renowned speed climber Jake Whisenant has died at age 30 following a high-alpine fall in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon Wilderness in California. The accident occurred on August 3 while Whisenant was attempting a first ascent of a new route.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner ruled the death an accident caused by blunt force trauma. National Park Service rangers responded to the scene of the incident.
Whisenant was a prominent figure in the big-wall climbing community, known for significant achievements on El Capitan. In October 2024, he and partner Brant Hysell set a new speed benchmark on the ‘Lurking Fear’ route, clocking 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 32 seconds, breaking a 20-year-old record. He also famously completed ‘The Nose’ on El Capitan twice in a single day earlier this year.
His fiancée, Emma London, shared a tribute describing his dedication to the sport and his supportive nature toward fellow climbers, noting that his career was filled with rapid accomplishments and a passion for challenging himself.
