Moroccan courts prosecute dozens over Ceuta migration surge
On 30‑31 July 2026, an estimated 70‑72 thousand migrants attempted irregular crossings from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The mass attempt resulted in at least 141 deaths, with 75 bodies recovered by Spanish authorities and 11 by Moroccan officials.
Moroccan prosecutors in Tétouan have opened criminal proceedings against multiple groups of suspects. One case involves 34 people, including five minors, charged with organizing illegal crossings and related violence. Separate prosecutions target 25 individuals and a larger batch of about 86 people for offences such as facilitating unauthorized border crossings, transporting passengers without licences, over‑loading boats, illegal stay after visa expiry, assaults on security forces, disobedience and property damage. In total, roughly a hundred people have been processed.
The Moroccan courts have sentenced 11 defendants to up to six months imprisonment and fines of up to €1,000 for facilitating clandestine exits and related crimes. Morocco has repeatedly denied any relaxation of border controls or pressure from the EU or Spain, stating that anyone attempting an unauthorised crossing will be returned to Morocco.
