Călin Georgescu faces court decision on pretrial detention

The Bucharest Court of Appeal is deliberating on a DIICOT appeal regarding the pretrial detention of former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu. On Monday, the Bucharest Tribunal rejected prosecutors' requests to extend his detention by 30 days, instead opting to place him under judicial control for 60 days.

Georgescu, who has been in custody since September 29, is accused of forming an organized criminal group and committing fraud. Investigators allege that Georgescu, along with Ioan Rusen and an Italian businessman, defrauded businessman Răzvan Leu of approximately 1.1 million euros. The scheme allegedly involved promising a 6-million-euro credit line in exchange for a guarantee exceeding 1 million euros.

If the Court of Appeal upholds the Tribunal's decision, Georgescu will be released under judicial control. If the appeal is granted, his detention will be extended. His current mandate expires at midnight on Wednesday, October 28.
