Călin Georgescu remains in preventive detention

The Bucharest Court of Appeal has ruled that former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu will remain in preventive detention. The decision follows a successful contestation by DIICOT prosecutors against a previous Bucharest Tribunal ruling that had allowed Georgescu to switch from detention to house arrest.

The court reached its decision via a divergence panel after the initial two judges, Cristian Dumitru and Daniela Maria Manolache, failed to reach a consensus. A third judge, Andreea Ionescu, joined the panel to finalize the ruling.

Georgescu faces multiple legal challenges. He is currently held in connection with an organized crime and fraud case involving a reported 1.1 million euro loss to a businessman. Additionally, a fifth criminal case has been opened regarding an alleged Legionary salute performed in public. He is also under investigation for allegedly hiring a specialist to scan his villa in Mogoșoaia for listening devices used by investigators.
