Călin Georgescu held in preventive arrest amid DIICOT fraud investigation

Călin Georgescu, a former presidential candidate, is currently in preventive arrest for 30 days following a DIICOT investigation into an alleged 1.1 million euro fraud. Prosecutors claim Georgescu, along with businessman Ionel Rusen and an Italian citizen, formed an organized criminal group that defrauded businessman Răzvan Leu by promising a 6 million euro credit line that never materialized.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Georgescu and his wife, Cristela Georgescu, have been summoned to DIICOT for hearings and digital forensic searches of electronic devices. Vasile Moldoveanu, Georgescu’s father-in-law, was also questioned as a witness regarding a 118,000 lei transfer made from his account to Răzvan Leu, which was marked as a ‘loan’.

Protests have erupted in Bucharest and other cities, with supporters demanding Georgescu’s release. The Bucharest Gendarmerie noted that these gatherings did not follow legal procedures for public assemblies. Additionally, Georgescu faces separate investigations concerning an alleged attempted coup d'état and Nazi propaganda.
