Călin Georgescu ordered into 30-day preventive arrest for fraud

Călin Georgescu, a former presidential candidate, has been placed in preventive arrest for 30 days following a decision by the Bucharest Court of Appeal. The court overturned a previous ruling that had placed him under judicial control. Georgescu and businessman Ionel Rusen are facing charges of forming an organized criminal group and fraud involving an alleged loss of 1.1 million euros.

DIICOT has also placed a preventive seizure on Georgescu's villa in Mogoșoaia as a security measure. While in custody at the Bucharest Central Arrest facility, reports indicate that Georgescu has refused provided meals and is requesting food parcels from home, which he is permitted to receive on Tuesdays.

His arrest has triggered significant public demonstrations. Hundreds of supporters have gathered outside the detention facility in Bucharest, chanting slogans and calling for his release. In response to these gatherings, the Capital Gendarmerie issued 32 fines totaling approximately 38,000 lei for violations of laws governing public assemblies.
