Romania: Authorities investigate Călin Georgescu fraud and major tax evasion schemes

Romanian authorities are conducting several high-profile investigations involving fraud and tax evasion. DIICOT prosecutors have expanded their case against former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu, who is currently in preventive arrest. The investigation involves allegations of organized crime and a 1.1 million euro fraud. As part of the proceedings, authorities have seized Georgescu's villa in Mogoșoaia and placed seven of his bank accounts under seizure, containing an estimated 100,000 euros. Investigators have also seized 27 electronic storage devices for forensic analysis.

Separately, the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) has identified a tax evasion scheme involving five recruitment firms specializing in Asian labor. These companies allegedly used fraudulent invoices totaling over 32 million lei to artificially reduce tax obligations by more than 6.2 million lei.

Other regional law enforcement activities include investigations into counterfeit gold sales in Arad and fuel theft within a railway transport company in Argeș.
