Clinical nutrition targets muscle loss in Spain

Disease-Related Malnutrition (DRM) is becoming a major priority in healthcare. According to the DRM White Paper in Spain, presented by the Spanish Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (SENPE), the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (SEEN), and HIRIS, the condition affects approximately one million people.

DRM carries an economic impact exceeding 1.6 billion euros annually and is linked to increased complications, hospital readmissions, and longer hospital stays. A critical consequence of this malnutrition is the loss of muscle mass, which can compromise a patient's autonomy and functionality.

Dr. Cristina De La Cuerda of the Gregorio Marañón University General Hospital noted that muscle acts as a reservoir of amino acids that supports immune function and metabolism during illness. To address these needs, Danone Nutricia has introduced a new nutritional formula designed to assist in the muscular and functional recovery of patients facing conditions such as cancer.
