Rising nutritional disorders in Europe

Overview

Reports from Spain and Central Europe highlight growing concerns regarding nutritional disorders, including obesity and disease-related malnutrition (DRM).

In Spain, a White Paper presented by medical societies indicates that DRM affects approximately one million people, resulting in an annual economic impact exceeding 1.6 billion euros. The condition is linked to increased hospital readmissions, longer stays, and the loss of muscle mass, which can compromise patient autonomy. Medical professionals note that muscle serves as a critical amino acid reservoir for immune function during illness.

In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, nutritional disorders are also on the rise. Data from the Czech insurer ČPZP shows a one-third increase in obesity and malnutrition cases over the last five years, with obesity accounting for 80 percent of treated cases. In Slovakia, experts have raised alarms regarding senior health, noting that insufficient protein intake and reduced food frequency can lead to muscle loss and diminished independence.
