Clint Eastwood preserved Mission Ranch in Carmel-by-the-Sea
In 1986, actor and former mayor Clint Eastwood intervened to prevent a multimillion-dollar condominium development at Mission Ranch in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The project had planned to demolish historic buildings to construct approximately 61 new homes.
Eastwood purchased the property for an estimated US$5.5 million to protect its natural character and historical significance. The site, located in Monterey County overlooking the Pacific Ocean, originally served as a 19th-century dairy farm and later functioned as a military officers' club during World War II.
Today, Mission Ranch operates as a historic hotel and restaurant situated on 22 acres of meadows and wetlands. The property features 31 guest rooms distributed across 10 restored wooden buildings.
