Clint Eastwood environmental and historic preservation

Overview

Actor and director Clint Eastwood has engaged in various land conservation and historic preservation efforts in California.

In 1986, Eastwood purchased the Mission Ranch in Carmel-by-the-Sea for approximately US$5.5 million to prevent a multimillion-dollar condominium development that would have demolished historic buildings. The site, a former 19th-century dairy farm and World War II military officers' club, now operates as a historic hotel and restaurant set within 22 acres of meadows and wetlands.

Additionally, Eastwood has managed the Odello ranch along the Carmel River since 1995. Rather than developing the property into a luxury residential neighborhood, he and his former wife, Margaret ‘Maggie’ Johnson, prioritized ecological restoration. Through the Carmel River Free Project, they worked to create a natural floodplain to mitigate local flooding. In 2016, they donated 32 hectares of the ranch to the Big Sur Land Trust to protect local species, including the red-legged frog and steelhead trout.
