Venezuela dialogue focuses on political prisoners and regional crises

Negotiations between the Venezuelan government and opposition sectors, sponsored by the United States, are currently underway in Caracas to facilitate a democratic transition. The opposition delegation, led by Dinorah Figuera, has been meeting with former political prisoners and their families to incorporate their demands into the dialogue. A primary focus of these discussions is the release of political detainees, a group that the NGO Foro Penal estimates currently numbers 382 individuals.

In addition to prisoner releases, various organizations have submitted requests to include the environmental, industrial, and humanitarian crises in southern Venezuela—specifically in Bolívar state—on the negotiation agenda. These groups are calling for attention to the collapse of services, labor issues, and the industrial breakdown in the region.

The dialogue process involves representatives from the 2015 National Assembly majority and government officials led by Jorge Rodríguez. While the meetings are being held privately without press access, the participants have agreed to principles of sovereignty, good faith, and political equality to seek a peaceful and constitutional solution for the country.
