Protests and civil‑society calls since May 2026 continue to press for an early presidential election before the interim government’s mandate ends on 3 July. They reiterated five criteria for any process—restoration of democratic institutions, release of all political prisoners, inclusive guarantees, a clear presidential‑election timetable and respect for popular sovereignty—and said they would not obstruct initiatives that achieve verifiable progress. The dialogue, promoted by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and slated to start on 1 August, was temporarily halted after the June 24 earthquakes that killed more than 5,500 people and left thousands homeless. The opposition reaffirmed the legitimacy of the 2023 primary and 2024 presidential election results, announced plans to return to Venezuela to aid reconstruction and build a “Gran Acuerdo Nacional,” and called for a new government with moral authority and managerial capacity. Rubio later confirmed Washington’s backing of the dialogue, calling it a “very significant proposal.”
