Clément Atangana, Cameroon's Constitutional Council President, dies at 85

Clément Atangana, the first president of Cameroon's Constitutional Council, died in Paris on October 4, 2026, at the age of 85 following a long illness. Atangana, a prominent magistrate, had led the institution since its establishment in 2018.

His leadership was marked by significant political influence, as the Council was responsible for adjudicating electoral disputes. Atangana presided over the Council during the 2018 and 2025 presidential elections, often issuing rulings that rejected opposition petitions, leading to criticisms regarding the institution's independence.

Following his death, Professor Paul Nchoji Nkwi, the eldest member of the Council, has been called to serve as interim president to ensure institutional continuity. Under Cameroonian law, the President of the Republic will be responsible for appointing a permanent successor to fill the vacancy.

The Chadian Constitutional Council has expressed its condolences to Cameroon, recognizing Atangana's contributions to constitutional justice in Africa.
