Appointment of Nama Remy to Cameroon Constitutional Council
Overview
Clément Atangana, the first president of Cameroon’s Constitutional Council, died in Paris at the age of 85 following a long illness. Atangana’s tenure was characterized by significant political influence, as the Council adjudicated electoral disputes during the 2018 and 2025 presidential elections. While government officials, such as Minister Grégoire Owona, honored him as a “great servant of the State,” his legacy remains a subject of debate. Critics, including lawyer Michelle Ndoki, have questioned the Council’s impartiality, alleging that Atangana’s leadership resulted in the rejection of opposition petitions and the validation of contested victories for Paul Biya.
Following his death, Professor Paul Nchoji Nkwi served as interim president to maintain institutional continuity. Following the return of Atangana’s remains to Yaoundé, where he was received with official honors at the Nsimalen International Airport, a permanent successor has been named.
By presidential decree, Nama Remy has been appointed as the new president of the Constitutional Council. A magistrate and high-ranking official, Remy previously served in the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic as a mission officer and legal affairs advisor. Additionally, Abdoulaye Daouda has been appointed as a member of the Council. The specific dates for the swearing-in ceremonies have not yet been confirmed.
