Clothing waste and upcycling trends highlight shift toward sustainable fashion

New research and consumer trends highlight growing concerns regarding clothing waste and overconsumption. An Oxfam report reveals that 22% of unwanted clothes in London are discarded as general household waste instead of being repaired, donated, or resold. To combat this, Oxfam Earlsfield hosted a fashion show featuring 76 upcycled looks created by volunteers, customers, and London Fashion Academy students. The event, part of the ‘Second Hand September’ campaign, demonstrated how donated fabrics and offcuts can be transformed into new garments through dyeing, cutting, and paneling.

In the United States, clothing utilization has decreased by approximately one-third over the last fifteen years, with the average garment being worn only seven times before disposal. Economic factors are also influencing wardrobe habits, as over 60% of Americans report that the cost of living impacts their clothing choices, leading nearly one-third to purchase more secondhand items. Experts suggest building capsule wardrobes with versatile pieces, such as the classic white button-down shirt, to mitigate the impact of impulse buying and overconsumption.
