Oxfam reports on sustainable fashion and second-hand markets
Overview
Oxfam has initiated its annual ‘Second Hand September’ campaign to promote sustainable fashion habits, such as donating and purchasing pre-loved clothing. A ‘State of Style’ report noted that while 57% of UK adults attempted to buy fewer clothes recently, clothing waste remains a significant issue. In the UK, approximately one-third of wardrobe items go unworn for a year, and the West Midlands reported the highest rate of single-use clothing purchases.
Expanding on the environmental complexities of the sector, Oxfam France issued a warning that not all second-hand consumption is environmentally beneficial. A report based on modeling by RDC Environnement highlights significant carbon footprint differences between various models. For every five kilograms of clothing, solidarity-based circuits produce approximately 0.6 kg of CO2, whereas commercial thrift stores produce 2.9 kg and online resale platforms like Vinted produce 3.1 kg.
Recent data highlights localized waste issues, noting that 22% of unwanted clothes in London are discarded as general household waste rather than being repaired, donated, or resold. To address this, Oxfam Earlsfield hosted a fashion show featuring 76 upcycled looks created by volunteers and students to demonstrate how donated fabrics can be transformed into new garments.
In the United States, clothing utilization has decreased by approximately one-third over the last fifteen years, with the average garment being worn only seven times before disposal. Economic factors are also influencing habits, as over 60% of Americans report that the cost of living impacts their clothing choices, leading nearly one-third to purchase more secondhand items.
