Cluj Metropolitan Train project receives first bid for electric trains

The Cluj Metropolitan Train project has reached a new administrative milestone following the receipt of a bid for the acquisition of electric multiple units (EMUs). This follows a previous failed tender in January, which was canceled after the only bidder, the Polish company PESA, submitted an incomplete application.

To encourage competition, the municipality adjusted its strategy by reducing the firm requirement from seven trains to five. The estimated maximum value for the tender is approximately 444 million lei (excluding VAT). This budget covers the purchase of the five trains, estimated at 224 million lei, as well as maintenance and repair services for the first 15 years of operation.

The contract includes an option to extend maintenance for an additional 15 years and a clause allowing the Cluj City Hall to supplement the order with two additional units at the same price and conditions. Mayor Emil Boc confirmed that the evaluation of the current offer is underway.

The project aims to connect Gârbău and Bonțida over a distance of 48.8 kilometers, intended to expand the metropolitan area, create jobs, and reduce traffic congestion through green transportation.
