Romania extends heavy‑truck traffic bans amid heat‑wave

The National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) and police traffic centres have imposed, and later extended, temporary bans on heavy‑truck traffic (vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 7.5 tonnes) on national, express and motorway sections in seven Romanian counties – Maramureș, Satu Mare, Sălaj, Bihor, Arad, Timiș and Caraș‑Severin. The bans apply during the hottest part of the day, from 12:00 to 20:00, on 5 – 6 August 2026, and are intended to protect bituminous road surfaces from irreversible deformation caused by extreme temperatures and to improve safety for all road users.

All categories of transport essential for public services are exempt, including passenger vehicles, transport of live animals and perishable food, emergency and rescue vehicles, postal and funeral services, fuel distribution, temperature‑controlled cargo, water and food aid, sanitation vehicles, and military convoys involved in multinational exercises. Authorities monitor the weather continuously and may adjust the restrictions according to the evolution of the heat‑wave warning (Code Red) issued by the National Meteorological Administration.
