Cluj-Napoca faces third major water pipe failure in nine days
Cluj-Napoca is experiencing a series of significant water infrastructure failures. On Friday evening, November 6, 2026, a major pipe burst on Constantin Brâncoveanu Street in the Gheorgheni neighborhood caused heavy flooding, turning the road into a river.
This incident marks the third major water network failure in the city within nine days. Previous large-scale bursts occurred on Calea Dorobanților: the first on October 29 at the intersection with Anghel Saligny Street, involving a 1.4-meter diameter transport pipe, and a second on November 5. The October 29 incident caused asphalt deformation and sinkholes due to water infiltrating beneath the roadway.
Apă Someș, the local water operator, stated that the affected pipeline on Calea Dorobanților was constructed between 1993 and 1995 and is scheduled for modernization. While the company has announced an infrastructure rehabilitation program valued at over 410 million euros, work on the specific Dorobanților pipeline has not yet commenced.
