Cluj-Napoca water infrastructure failures
Overview
In October 2026, residents in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, reported sewerage overflows on Donath Street following minimal rainfall. These incidents resulted in white foam spreading across roadways, with locals noting that drainage issues and water accumulation have persisted for several years due to long-standing blockages.
By November 2026, the city experienced a series of significant water network failures. Within a nine-day period, three major incidents occurred: a large-scale burst on Calea Dorobanților on October 29 involving a 1.4-meter diameter pipe, a second burst on November 5, and a third major pipe failure on Constantin Brâncoveanu Street on November 6. The October 29 incident caused sinkholes and asphalt deformation.
The local water operator, Apă Someș, identified that the affected pipeline on Calea Dorobanților was built between 1993 and 1995. While the company has announced an infrastructure rehabilitation program worth over 410 million euros, modernization work on the specific Dorobanților pipeline has not yet begun.
