Cluj's RIVUS mixed-use development opens first integrated cultural centre as Bucharest hosts weekend heritage festival

The RIVUS project in Cluj‑Napoca, developed by IULIUS and Atterbury Europe, is converting the former Carbochim industrial platform into a mixed‑use complex that will include Romania’s first permanent cultural centre. The former Hala cu Arcade is being transformed into RIVUS Live Arts, a venue for theatre, dance, concerts, exhibitions and workshops. Project manager Sorin Guttman said, “It is the first time a mixed‑use project in Romania integrates a permanent cultural centre from the design phase, not as an added function later.” The space has already hosted a contemporary dance performance, the “Sculpting Space” showcase, and an exhibition titled “Under Construction” in partnership with the University of Art and Design, highlighting the interaction of art, architecture and urban redevelopment.

Meanwhile, Bucharest’s “Străzi deschise – București” weekend celebrates the city’s living heritage with guided tours of Calea Victoriei, interactive career‑orientation activities for youths at the USAMV caravan, and open‑air art workshops in Kretzulescu Park. The main boulevard is temporarily pedestrianised, allowing cultural events to take place safely from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm, with traffic resuming at night.

Both initiatives underscore a broader effort to revitalize Romanian urban spaces through culture and community engagement.
