CMB. TECH launches world's first ammonia-powered bulk carrier
The Mineral Europa, a 300-meter dry-bulk carrier capable of running on ammonia, has begun its maiden voyage from Belgium to Australia. The 210,000-dwt vessel is designed to transport iron ore from Western Australia’s Pilbara region to China and other international markets.
Owned by Bocimar and chartered to Fortescue, the ship represents a major milestone for the Belgian company CMB. TECH in its decade-long effort to decarbonize the maritime sector. The vessel utilizes a dual-fuel engine developed in partnership with WinGD, allowing it to run on either ammonia or conventional marine fuel. To ensure safety, liquid ammonia is stored in independent tanks mounted on the deck.
CMB. TECH plans to expand its ammonia-powered fleet significantly, with 21 vessels scheduled for delivery by 2029, including eighteen dry-bulk ships, one container ship, and two chemical tankers. CEO Alexander Saverys stated that the vessel proves large ocean-going ships can be powered by ammonia, marking what he described as a “propulsion revolution” for the industry.
