CMB.TECH ammonia-powered maritime decarbonization
Overview
The Belgian company CMB.TECH has launched the Mineral Europa, a 210,000-dwt dry-bulk carrier designed to run on ammonia. The vessel, built at the Qingdao Beihai shipyard in China, began its maiden voyage from Belgium to Australia to transport iron ore from the Pilbara region.
During its initial stages, the ship was refueled in Zhoushan, China, with 1,000 tonnes of green ammonia via ship-to-ship transfer. While the dual-fuel engine represents what CEO Alexander Saverys calls a “propulsion revolution,” the technology faces economic hurdles. Ammonia-powered vessels are roughly 15–20% more expensive than conventional ships, and green ammonia costs approximately five times more than traditional marine diesel. Additionally, ammonia requires three times the storage space of diesel for equivalent energy.
CMB.TECH intends to expand its ammonia-powered fleet with 21 vessels scheduled for delivery by 2029, including bulk carriers, a container ship, and chemical tankers. Fortescue has already secured agreements to charter several Newcastlemax vessels from the fleet.
