CNAIR activates traffic monitoring systems on DN1

The National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) has activated the first fixed traffic monitoring systems on the DN1 national road between Bucharest and Ploiești. These devices are part of a broader initiative to improve road safety and implement traffic calming measures on one of Romania’s most heavily trafficked routes.

Unlike traditional speed cameras, these specific systems are designed for real-time warning rather than issuing fines. The devices monitor both directions of travel using dedicated cameras for each lane. When a vehicle exceeds the speed limit, the system displays the speed and a red emoticon on digital LED panels to alert the driver. If the driver is within the legal limit, a green smiley face is displayed. CNAIR spokesperson Alin Șerbănescu clarified that the data collected is not transmitted to the Traffic Police for the purpose of issuing contraventions.

To further encourage slower speeds, the infrastructure includes red asphalt surfaces for increased visibility and resonant road markings that produce noise and vibrations. The current active locations include the entrances to Snagov, Tancabesti, Potigrafu, and Puchenii Mari. The project aims to expand the network to include Otopeni, Balotesti, Ciolpani, and Barcanesti, with a national goal of installing 130 such devices.
