CNAIR installs 145 speed monitoring systems on Romanian roads

The National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) is installing 145 speed monitoring systems on Romanian national roads to reduce vehicle speeds when entering populated areas. Funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the project has a total value of approximately 100 million lei, with over 82 million lei provided by PNRR support.

These devices are designed for prevention rather than enforcement. Unlike the police e-SIGUR system, these tools do not record license plates, take photos, or store personal data, and they do not issue fines. Instead, they use a beam of rays to measure speed from a distance of approximately 100 meters and display the results instantly on LED panels. These panels use green or red emoticons to provide immediate visual feedback to drivers.

The locations for these installations were selected based on road safety analyses, specifically targeting high-risk sectors where serious accidents have occurred. This initiative aligns with the National Road Safety Strategy 2022–2030 and is part of an integrated package of traffic calming measures.
