Écône Episcopal Consecrations Lead to Automatic Excommunication

On 1 July 2026 the Society of Saint Pius X carried out episcopal consecrations at Écône without a papal mandate. Under canon law the act incurs a latae sententiae (automatic) excommunication, which was declared the following day for the consecrating bishops and the newly ordained bishops.

The episode revives the long‑standing Lefebvre schism. Commentators noted the 1988 excommunication of Archbishop Lefebvre, its partial remission by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009, and Pope Francis’s recent permission for SSPX priests to validly celebrate certain sacraments. Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, acting on the Pope’s instructions, had tried to prevent the sanction.

Analyses linked the current dispute to historic church divisions, emphasizing the tension between the SSPX’s claim to preserve tradition and the Vatican’s authority over episcopal appointments.
