Vatican excommunications of SSPX and related actions
Entities: Society of Saint Pius X · Wojciech Gołaski · Marcel Lefebvre · Bernard Fellay · Dominican Order
Overview
Following the illicit episcopal consecrations at Écône on 1 July 2026, the Holy See declared the Society of Saint Pius X a schism on 2 July and excommunicated six of its bishops, warning that sacraments performed by SSPX clergy are illicit and often invalid. U.S. bishops, including Archbishop Gustavo García‑Siller, reinforced the Vatican’s warning.
The Society’s Superior General issued a letter after the ceremony, thanking attendees and denouncing the Vatican’s sanctions. The Holy See reiterated its stance, maintaining the excommunications and imposing penalties on SSPX clergy and lay supporters. Polish commentators questioned the consistency of the Vatican’s position, suggesting a broader crisis of Catholic practice in Europe.
In Brazil, the Diocese of Marabá removed priest Antônio de Pádua Souza from ministry and automatically excommunicated him after he joined the SSPX, with the Vatican confirming that any sacraments he performed are null and invalid.
The Dominican Order in Poland issued a warning during its “Dominican Week of Spirituality” (26 July–2 August) against participation in events run by former Dominican Wojciech Gołaski, who is now associated with the SSPX’s unauthorized episcopal consecrations. The warning underscores ongoing tensions between the Vatican‑recognized hierarchy and traditionalist groups operating outside papal approval.
