CNews warned by French regulator ARCOM for inadequate political pluralism

The French media regulator ARCOM issued a formal notice to CNews on 12 June 2026 (made public 15 June) after reviewing more than 168 hours of the channel’s March 2025 broadcasts. The regulator said the channel’s coverage showed a marked dominance of certain viewpoints – portraying Islam and immigration as societal threats, frequently critiquing the European Union, the French judiciary and the party La France Insoumise – with limited space for opposing opinions. The complaint was brought by Reporters sans frontières, which had highlighted a structural imbalance in CNews’s programming.

The notice cites the first application of ARCOM’s July 2024 deliberation that extends pluralism requirements beyond the equal time of political personalities to the overall balance of ideas. CNews, part of the Canal+ group owned by Vincent Bolloré, said it would appeal the decision before the French Council of State and, if necessary, European courts to defend press freedom. ARCOM announced ongoing monitoring of the four continuous‑news channels – CNews, BFMTV, Franceinfo and LCI – as France approaches the 2027 presidential election.
