Overview

In July 2026 the French competition authority ordered Meta Platforms to resume good‑faith talks with press collectives DVP and APIG and to submit a detailed payment plan for news content within 15 days, after earlier remuneration agreements had lapsed.

The audiovisual regulator ARCOM announced that, from 1 October, political speeches or interviews aired between midnight and 5:59 a.m. will no longer count toward broadcasters’ equal‑airtime quotas, ending a loophole used by channels such as CNews. At the same time ARCOM issued a formal warning to CNews over a programme on mayoral candidate Rachida Dati, signalling possible financial sanctions, and in June ordered the channel to comply with rules on pluralism and diversity of opinion.

On 29 July ARCOM fined CNews €200,000 for two 2025 broadcast segments. One linked post‑Champions‑League violence after Paris Saint‑Germain’s win to children of Arab‑Muslim immigrants, describing them as “barbarians” and a “civilisation problem”. The other featured a Belgian municipal councilor in a veil, presented as evidence of a “Great Replacement”. Both segments were deemed likely to incite hatred and discrimination. Erik Tegnér, founder of the identitarian outlet Frontières, appeared as a commentator in both broadcasts. CNews, owned by Vincent Bolloré, announced it will appeal the sanction to the Conseil d’État.

These actions reflect a broader French push to enforce pluralism, curb extremist content, and secure platform payments ahead of the 2026 municipal and 2027 presidential elections.
