CNG adoption reduces daily fuel costs for Nigerian tricycle operators

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for promoting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative to petrol. According to Alhaji Abiola Azeez, a State Executive Council member of the NURTW, the transition has significantly lowered operating expenses for commercial transport operators.

In Lagos, tricycle operators reported that daily fuel costs dropped from between N15,000 and N17,000 when using petrol to approximately N3,500 to N4,000 when using CNG. The union noted that the federal government’s deployment of CNG-powered buses and tricycles, along with free CNG installations for some vehicles, has provided major relief to operators.

Additionally, the union has launched a quarterly safety monitoring programme in Lagos to inspect commercial vehicles and provide essential maintenance items, such as tyres and engine oil, to help reduce road accidents.
