Nigeria CNG and electric vehicle expansion

Nigeria is expanding its use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles (EV) to lower transportation costs and promote clean mobility. The Presidential Initiative on CNG and EV announced that nationwide transport fares were expected to decrease starting October 1 following stakeholder meetings in Abuja.

Various states have begun implementing infrastructure and vehicle deployments. Niger state has operational CNG buses and charging stations, while Abia state is expanding its electric bus fleet. Ogun state has acquired electric motorcycles, and Cross River has deployed electric vehicles. In Delta, conversion centres and CNG stations are active, and Sokoto is converting petrol-powered metropolitan vehicles to CNG to maintain subsidized fares.

Commercial operators have reported significant economic relief from the transition. In Lagos, tricycle operators noted that daily fuel costs dropped from approximately N15,000–N17,000 using petrol to roughly N3,500–N4,000 using CNG. The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has commended the federal government for these developments and has launched safety monitoring programmes to assist commercial vehicle maintenance.
