Nigeria expands CNG and EV initiatives amid spending queries

Overview

Nigeria continues to expand its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure to mitigate rising fuel costs. To deepen the transition, Ismael Ahmed, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG&EV), has proposed making CNG adoption mandatory for commercial vehicles. Ahmed noted that because commercial vehicles represent approximately 55 to 60 per cent of Nigeria’s estimated 12 million vehicles, prioritizing this sector could significantly lower transportation costs and reduce petrol and diesel reliance.

Following a directive from President Bola Tinubu, several states including Lagos, Kwara, Ekiti, Plateau, and Enugu are implementing measures to lower transportation costs through subsidized buses. While Lagos has received additional CNG buses, implementation remains uneven due to infrastructure gaps, high conversion costs, and resistance from some commercial operators. In Edo State, the administration introduced 50 new CNG buses to address fleet shortages in the Edo City Transport Service.

Despite the rollout of 670 CNG buses nationwide, logistical hurdles persist. Motorists at stations in regions like Ogun State report significant delays and overnight queues, raising concerns that time lost waiting for fuel may offset cost savings.

On the energy front, Nigeria’s proven gas reserves increased to 215.19 trillion cubic feet as of January 2026, with average production rising to 7.5 billion cubic feet per day. Tosin Coker, COO of PI-CNG & EV, stated that abundant reserves allow the nation to control domestic pricing and shield consumers from global volatility. However, management of the ₦100 billion allocated to the Presidential CNG Initiative continues to face scrutiny regarding the transparency of contract disbursements.
