Coahuila authorities detain student for school threats
Authorities in Coahuila have detained a 16-year-old student from Escuela Secundaria Federal Número 2 in Torreón following social media posts threatening educational institutions. The student reportedly claimed the messages were a joke intended to avoid attending classes. Following the investigation by cyber police and state authorities, the teenager and his parents were referred to the Procuraduría para Niños, Niñas y la Familia (Pronnif).
State Attorney General Federico Fernández Montañez emphasized that such threats cannot be treated as jokes. He also reported the detention of two other minors in central Coahuila who allegedly intended to confront peers at their school, though it is unclear if this is linked to the social media threats.
In response to recent incidents involving weapons in schools in Querétaro and Torreón, psychologist Jorge Arturo Balderrama noted that adolescents may be imitating violent behaviors observed online. He highlighted that emotional instability, social resentment, and constant exposure to violent news can contribute to the normalization of such conduct. Experts recommend strengthening emotional support in schools and increasing parental supervision to identify warning signs.
