School threats and violence in Coahuila

Overview

Authorities in Coahuila, Mexico, have responded to several incidents involving threats and violence directed at educational institutions. On October 8, a 16-year-old student in Torreón was detained after making social media posts threatening schools, which the individual claimed were intended as a joke to avoid classes. State Attorney General Federico Fernández Montañez noted that such threats are not treated as jokes, and the student and his parents were referred to child protection services.

By October 12, the situation escalated following a violent attack at Secundaria General 13 in Ejido La Unión, which resulted in the death of teacher Nedi Edith Nevárez González and injuries to four others. A 26-year-old man was detained for posting social media messages claiming responsibility for the assault. While investigators ruled out his direct involvement in the physical attack, he is being investigated for spreading content intended to “cause fear, alarm, and confusion.” Authorities have identified two direct suspects in the attack as investigations continue.
