Coahuila legislator proposes law to prioritize rickettsiosis control

Deputy Edith Hernández Sillas has proposed a reform to Article 4 of the Coahuila State Health Law to prioritize the prevention and control of rickettsiosis. The initiative aims to mandate that local sanitary authorities treat these zoonotic diseases, which are transmitted by ticks, fleas, and lice, as a priority.

According to the Coahuila Ministry of Health, there have been 41 confirmed cases and 30 deaths as of August. The proposal follows an emergency operation involving medical training and community prevention to address late diagnoses. Rickettsiosis symptoms, such as fever and muscle pain, can be non-specific, making early identification difficult without knowledge of contact with infested animals or parasites.
