Rickettsiosis outbreak and prevention in Coahuila

Overview

In Coahuila, Mexico, health officials and legislators are responding to the threat of rickettsiosis, a zoonotic disease transmitted by ticks, fleas, and lice. Early reports indicated 41 confirmed cases and 30 deaths as of August, prompting Deputy Edith Hernández Sillas to propose a reform to the Coahuila State Health Law to mandate the prioritization of rickettsiosis prevention and control.

As the situation progressed, health authorities in the central region intensified surveillance and medical training. While 72 suspected cases were ruled out in Monclova and Frontera, seven positive cases and five deaths were confirmed in that region. To address the high mortality rate of untreated cases, medical specialists and experts from Texas have been involved in training approximately 150 doctors. Public health efforts are currently focusing on medical personnel training and community-level prevention, such as pet hygiene and waste management to eliminate tick habitats.
