Coahuila reports 37 deaths from rickettsia with 70% lethality rate
Coahuila has recorded 51 cases of rickettsiosis with 37 deaths so far in 2026, representing a lethality rate exceeding 70%, according to State Health Secretary Eliud Aguirre Vázquez.
The disease is present throughout the state, though the highest concentration of cases is located in the Comarca Lagunera region. Health officials noted that late diagnosis is a primary challenge, as symptoms are often confused with other illnesses, leading to severe patient deterioration before hospital arrival.
In response, the Secretary of Health is conducting training sessions for medical professionals in both public and private sectors across all 38 municipalities. An epidemiologist from Mexico City is leading these efforts, which have already included training 300 doctors in Torreón, as well as sessions in Monclova and Piedras Negras. Additionally, health jurisdictions are performing fumigation activities as a preventive measure.
