Coahuila reports 42 rickettsia deaths and 58 cases
Health authorities in Coahuila, Mexico, have reported 58 confirmed cases of rickettsia and 42 deaths through the end of September 2026. This represents a mortality rate exceeding 70 percent.
The highest concentration of cases is located in the Laguna region, though the disease is also active in the Southeast region, including Saltillo and Ramos Arizpe. State Health Subsecretary Iván Moscoso noted that high lethality is largely due to delayed medical attention, as early symptoms are often mistaken for other ailments.
To combat the outbreak, the Coahuila Health Secretariat has trained over 300 public and private sector physicians to improve early detection. Authorities are also conducting home inspections and sanitary cordons following confirmed deaths to identify risk factors and reduce tick populations. Officials highlighted that pets, particularly dogs moving in and out of homes, are a primary way ticks enter living spaces like mattresses and sofas.
