Coahuila State Congress pushes diversity training and citizen observatory plan

The Congress of the State of Coahuila held a series of events on June 25 to promote cultural, ethnic and social diversity within public policy. The gender unit led a in‑person talk titled “Interculturalidad: Diversidad que suma” and a virtual training called “Legislar para la diversidad,” presented by Laura Martínez Rivera and Mónica Aguirre Navarro. The sessions aimed to strengthen legislators’ understanding of intersectionality and interculturality as tools for drafting inclusive laws, advancing substantive equality, non‑discrimination and human‑rights protection.

Separately, academic Blenda Guadalupe Castañuela Sánchez has called for the creation of a feminist and citizen observatory to monitor the work of Coahuila’s legislators. The proposed body would gather women and men from academia, social leadership, legal and legislative expertise to evaluate proposals on social protection, health, education, transport, justice and human rights, offering objective analysis and recommendations free of partisan bias. Castañuela emphasizes that the observatory should serve the broader public interest and is being discussed as the state Congress begins a new term.
